December 11, 1972 – Longest lunar stay by humans

Apollo 17, the last manned lunar mission, launched on December 7, 1972, at night. It was the eleventh manned space mission in NASA’s Apollo program. The Apollo 17 mission set several records:

  • longest manned lunar landing flight
  • longest total lunar surface extravehicular activities
  • largest lunar sample return
  • longest time in lunar orbit.
