December 12, 1972 – astronauts raise American flag on the moon, see original video

Apollo 17 was the eleventh manned space mission in the Apollo program, launching on December 7, 1972. It was the only night launch and the final lunar landing mission of NASA. The next lunar mission for NASA is planned for around 2020.

“Raising the flag: At the beginning, Jack Schmitt is closer to the camera than Gene Cernan. Gene hammers the bottom half of the flagstaff into the ground then inserts the top half, with flag attached, into the bottom half. The flag appears to wave as he moves it about.
