Female monkey – Miss Sam – launches to orbit January 21, 1960

The mission name was Little Joe 1B. It was a Mercury spacecraft test launch from Wallops Island, Virginia. The lone crew member was Miss Sam, a rhesus monkey. Several other tests with monkeys preceded Miss Sam’s test flight. The test with Miss Sam was successful returning the primate back to earth in about 45 minutes. The capsule was recovered as well.

  1. Hate to be a nit-picker, but this little monkey went nowhere near “orbit.” The Little Joe rocket sent the spacecraft to an altitude of about 40 miles, which doesn’t even qualify as “space,” and surely wasn’t capable of putting a mercury capsule into orbit.
