September 11, 1935 – Russian cosmonaut Gherman Titov is born

Russian cosmonaut Gherman Titov (born September 11, 1935 in the village of Verkhnie Zhilino) died on September 20, 2000. Titov was the second human to orbit the earth, preceded only by Yuri Gagarin.

Wikipedia says:

“Following his spaceflight, Titov went on to assume various senior positions in the Soviet space programme until his retirement in1992. In 1995 he was elected to the State Duma as a member of the Communist Party. He died of cardiac arrest in his sauna at the age of 65 in Moscow. He was buried in the Novodevichy Cemetery. Titov’s family has established a fund in Houston towards NASA’s research center.”

From L/R: The man on the far left is not a cosmonaut and is unknonw; in foreground second from left is Gagarin, then Gagarin’s wife Valentina, then Alexei Leonov in tracksuit, and Sergei Korolev is on the right of photo. Sergei Pavlovich Korolev (Dec 1906 – Jan 1966) was the “Chief Designer” of most of the rockets used in Soviet space ventures.

  1. The people in this photo are misidentified. I do not know the name of the fellow on the left (he’s definitely not a cosmonaut, even though the paper he’s holding is supposedly signed by Titov), but also in foreground second from left is Gagarin, then Gagarin’s wife Valentina, then Alexei Leonov in tracksuit, and Sergei Korolev is on the right of photo.
